Puzzle by Paula Gamache, edited by Will Shortz

LOADED (52A. What 3-, 13-, 14- and 28-Down may be) along with BOOZEHOUND (Tippler), BEAST OF BURDEN (Donkey, for one), TRICK QUESTION (“How many months have 28 days?,” e.g.) and MACHINE GUN (Rat-a-tat-tat weapon) are the interrelated group of this Tuesday crossword. Critics will likely make note that the long interrelated entries are unorthodox downs, citing same as adding seconds to their precious solving time! HASTE and PDQ (26A. Speediness, 33A. Pronto)!

Of other interest — 27-Across with the long clue of Kwame NKRUMAH, advocate of pan-Africanism and the first P.M. of Ghana might have gone on even a little longer to note that he was also the last, as the position was abolished at the end of his term! ISHTAR (21A. Film bomb of 1987) gets its standard derogatory clue.  BLOTTO and GUSTO (31A. Stewed to the gills, 20D. Zest) cross mid-puzzle, as do LIU and LIEU (35A. Lucy of “Kill Bill”, 32D. Place).

Of a little interest — AERIAL (47D. Formerly common rooftop sight), BAUHAUS (8D. German design school founded in 1919), 5D. BUNGEE jumping, DEADPAN (41D. Expressionless), DUDED UP (45A. Dressed to the nines), EIGHTS (43A. Figure-skating figures), ETHANOL (49A. Gasoline additive), I REFUSE (23A. “You can’t make me!”), OFF-HOUR (36A. Period of low activity).

Five-letter — ASCII (47A. Computer data acronym), AVOIR (2D. To have, t Henri), BAMBI (1D. Disney fawn), BUILT (13A. Manufactured), ENTER (17A. Keyboard key), EIEIO (58A. Farm letters?), LENDS (51D. Makes advances?), NOLAN (62A. Ryan in Cooperstown), OXIDE (50D. Water or rust), 38D. Nouveau RICHE.

Short stuff — AGIN, AIDA, AIRS, ALE, ALOT, AMO, ALTA, AVON, BABE, BELT, BIZ, BLIP, BLVD, BOD, BSA, DIE, ELAN, END, FAT, FOPS, GAGS, GIA, HENS, IDEA, IOS, LIU and LIEU, LIST, LYRE, MOOD and MUDD, Trompe l’OEIL, ONES, PARR, PDQ and PHD, RITA, SALE, SITS, SLR and STL, UCLA, UNDO, USER, VEND and YELP.

Notably all in the same puzzle, BOOZEHOUND, BLOTTO, LOADED, A LOT, BELT and ALE — that must have been some weekend!
